BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Sam Houston women's tennis team opens its 66th season of dual match competition Sunday afternoon when the Bearkats take on nationally-ranked Texas A&M at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the Aggies' campus.
The match vs the Aggies can be followed via Statbroadcast, while each court can be watched on 12thman.com
The 2026 Bearkat roster is loaded with experience with seven letter winners return from last spring.
Senior letterwinners Aaliyah Hohmann, Christine Jevicky, Nayuma Subba, Jacqueline Schnabel and Adithi Venkatakrishnan look to provide leadership while junior Sara Sadadinovic and sophomore Ella Fitcher bring important experience to the squad.
Sophomore transfer Isabella Garza from Midwestern State and freshman Anamaria Kurtsikashvili could also provide an immediate boost.
"The team is facing a challenge Sunday in College Station versus the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA women's tennis," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said. "The Aggies consistently appear in the Sweet 16 / Elite Eight rounds and won the national championship in 2024."
Texas A&M is looking to continue its 71-match winning streak at home. The Maroon & White finished last season with a 16-0 record at the Mitchell Tennis Center, rounded out with a 4-2 victory over No. 17 UCLA in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament.
Texas A&M sports a strong lineup led by No. 34 nationally ranked Mia Kupres who reached the Round of 32 at last season's NCAA Championship. Kupres and her partner Daria Smetannikov were the No. 57-ranked duo in the country last year.
"It's exciting for the girls to face a national powerhouse squad in front of a big crowd in an outstanding tennis venue like the one in College Station," Hubbard said. "We look forward to this opportunity to test ourselves against the best we get every year at A&M."
Sam Houston takes to the courts this spring after producing several top performances in fall semester tournaments at Rice, Abilene Chrisitan, Texas State and the ITA Regionals in Fort Worth. The Kats closed out the fall with a strong showing at the annual Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville.
Next up for the Kats are four consecutive home matches at the Chuck & Wanda Beckner Tennis Center on the SHSU campus. Sam Houston hosts Lamar Friday January 23, LSU Shreveport and LSU Alexandria on Sunday January 25, and former Southland Conference rival McNeese on January 30.
