LAREDO – The Sam Houston Bearkats men's golf team will travel just an hour south to compete in the 2026 Border Olympics, beginning Monday, February 16, at Laredo Country Club.
The two-day event, hosted by Houston Cougars, will feature 54 holes of play, with 36 holes scheduled for Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Laredo Country Club is a par-72 course measuring 7,257 yards and is regarded as one of the premier layouts in South Texas, featuring narrow, tree-lined fairways, water hazards, and demanding rough. Portions of the course run alongside the Rio Grande River, creating challenging holes where the border hazard comes into play near the fairway.
The Border Olympics has been contested annually since 1952. Sam Houston has competed in the tournament each season since 2013 and has finished inside the top five every year from 2018 through 2024. The Bearkats' best showing came in 2019, when they placed second overall.
The Bearkats will be part of a 13-team field that includes Houston, Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Louisiana (the defending champions), New Mexico State, North Texas, Tarleton State, Troy, UT Rio Grande Valley, Wichita State, and Wright State.
Last season, Sam Houston finished tied for seventh after posting a 20-over-par total. Ethan Dufresne led the Bearkats, shooting rounds of 76-74-74, while Alex Malanga added scores of 76-78-81 over the three rounds.
The Bearkats enter the week coming off a second-place finish at the Bentwater Intercollegiate. Freshman Caleb Lumpkin placed third overall after recording four birdies in the final round to finish with rounds of 70-72-69. Newcomer Jackson Hymer followed closely, placing fourth after shooting even par for the tournament.
Live scoring will be available throughout the event via Clippd, with updated results provided following each round.
