Series vs the Blue Raiders: 1-2
Â
HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston will get a shot to avenge a heartbreaking loss earlier in the CUSA season when Middle Tennessee comes to Johnson Coliseum Wednesday evening.
Â
The Bearkats dropped a one-point loss on a last-second shot in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, back in January to fall to 0-3 in league play. Sam Houston has since won 9 of its last 11 to move into sole possession of second place in CUSA.
Â
The game with the Blue Raiders will be streamed on ESPN+ and can also be heard online on the Bearkat Sports Network with Carlos Zimmermann on the call.
Â
TENNESSEE HEARTBREAK
Sam Houston overcame a 17-point deficit only to come up short in a 68-67 loss at Middle Tennessee State in the first meeting this season on Jan. 4.
Â
The Bearkats had a chance to extend a one-point lead in the final seconds twice at the free throw line but could not get the front end of the one-and-ones to drop to 0-3 in CUSA play at the time with all losses coming on the road.
Â
Sam Houston trailed 25-8 in the first half before rallying to tie it at the break. MTSU went back up by five with under four and half minutes left. Jacobe Coleman hit a 3, Jacob Walker added a three-point play and a layup by Veljko Ilic helped the Kats go up 61-60.
Â
With the clock winding down, Walker was able to find Ilic under the basket to put the Kats up 67-66. The plays just didn't go their way down the stretch as MTSU was able to steal it with a basket in the final seconds.
Â
QUITE A TURNAROUND
The Kats began CUSA play 0-3 and have since won 9 of their last 11 contests, which included a seven-game winning streak, featuring home wins against Delaware, Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech and UTEP and three on the road at Jax State, FIU and Missouri State.
