HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston struck first and held on in the ninth to avoid a weekend sweep on Sunday with a 6-4 win over UIC in the series finale at Don Sanders Stadium.
Nathan Fink and Wes Baker each had a pair of hits and combined for five RBI while the Bearkat (4-3) arms continued to look strong in the early portion of the season. Two of Fink's three RBI came on a 2-run triple in a 4-run third inning that had the Kats up 5-0 early on.
On the mound, Collin Aloisio earned his second win in as many starts, working his way into the sixth inning with a pair of strikeouts and a pair of unearned runs allowed. The Kats then used a quartet of relief arms to go the rest of thew way, ending with Kade Neuenschwander leaving the bases loaded to register his second save of the year.
Baker got the Kats on the board in the first with an RBI single off UIC (3-4) starter Jared Lessman and the offense got him out of the game in the third with the 4-run frame. Cade Corcoran got the first run home with a sure single to right field to score Jeric Curtis before Fink delivered his 2-run triple off the right-field wall. Baker then picked up his second RBI of the day with a sac fly to score Fink.
Meanwhile, Aloisio put up four straight zeros before the Flames got on the board with a run thanks to a Bearkat error in the fifth. UIC went on to add another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to get to within 5-4 but the Kats took advantage of a Flame miscue in the seventh, getting Caleb Cotton around the bases and plating him on a sac fly by Fink.
That insurance run gave SHSU some needed cushion as UIC made it interesting in the ninth, loading the sacks with two outs against Neuenschwander before the righty set Lucas Smith down on strikes for the final out of the day.
