LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sam Houston's late surge came up short Thursday night as the Bearkats fell 65–57 to New Mexico State at the Pan American Center, dropping their second conference road contest of the season.
The Bearkats (13–7, 6–3 CUSA) opened the fourth quarter on a 10–0 run to cut into the Aggies' lead, but New Mexico State (8–14, 4–6 CUSA) had built too large of a cushion to fully overcome.
Deborah Ogayemi tied her career high with 19 points and added 10 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season. Whitney Dunn contributed nine points, while Nyla Inmon finished with eight.
NMSU outscored Sam Houston 32–20 in the first half, stretching the lead to as many as 18 midway through the third quarter. The Bearkats responded with a strong defensive effort, trimming the margin to seven in the final minute, but ultimately ran out of time. Sam Houston shot only 31 percent from the field and 48 percent from the free-throw line.
The Bearkats forced 21 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 42–37, including 21 defensive boards, while scoring 23 second-chance points. Aysia Ward-Strong led the defensive effort with four steals, and Ogayemi added three.
