HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team split its opening day of the 2026 season, defeating South Dakota before falling to Creighton at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

Sam Houston 11, South Dakota 2 (5 inn.)

The Bearkats (1-1) scored six runs in the first inning against South Dakota (0-2), setting the tone early. Freshman Sophia Lundstrom jump-started the rally with a single up the middle for her first collegiate hit.

Sam Houston added three runs in the second inning and two more in the third, then ended the game by run rule in the fifth inning with an 11-2 victory.

Bella Perez hit her first home run of the season in the third inning. Lundstrom recorded the team's only triple, while Morgan Holliday led the Bearkats with three RBIs. Sam Houston did not strike out at the plate in the game.

Creighton 7, Sam Houston 1

Sam Houston took an early lead against Creighton (2-0), scoring in the third inning and holding the advantage for three frames before the Blue Jays pulled away in the sixth. Creighton secured was able to hold off the Kats for a 7-1 win.

Perez threw out a runner attempting to steal, discouraging aggressive baserunning. Lundstrom and Jordan Peno led the Bearkats with three hits apiece on the day.

Day 2-Bearkat Classic

The Bearkats look to bounce back Saturday against Creighton at 1:30 p.m. on day two of the Bearkat Classic, before facing South Dakota at 6 p.m. to close out the evening.
