Kats Go 1-1 On Day 2

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston Bearkats split a pair of games Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex, defeating Creighton behind a first-inning grand slam before falling in a close contest against South Dakota on day two of the Bearkat Classic.Â
Sam Houston 10, Creighton 5Â
The Bearkats (2-2) came out swinging in the first inning against Creighton (2-2).Â
With the bases loaded and two outs, Karrlauhn Deas launched a grand slam to right-center field to give Sam Houston an early lead. Creighton answered with runs in the top of the second, but the Bearkats extended the advantage with additional runs in the third and fifth innings.Â
Carlee Bubela made her first collegiate appearance in the circle and earned her first career win. Tiffany Sanchez recorded her first career save, facing 10 batters without allowing a hit. Tricia Yarotsky added her first home run of the season.Â
South Dakota 2, Sam Houston 1Â
Sam Houston dropped a tightly contested matchup against South Dakota (1-3).Â
The Bearkats held the Coyotes scoreless until the third inning before allowing one run, followed by another in the fourth. Sam Houston mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth when Deas doubled to score Bella Perez from second base, but South Dakota held on and shut out the Bearkats in the seventh inning.Â
Deas and freshman Sophia Lundstrom each recorded two hits and lead the team in batting average at .600 and .500, respectively. Kyla Heine threw out a runner attempting to steal second for the third out in the top of the third inning.Â
Day 3 — Bearkat ClassicÂ
The Bearkats conclude play in the Bearkat Classic on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Central Arkansas at the Bearkat Softball Complex.Â
