Kats climbs to tenth in Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Sam Houston men's golf team finished 10th at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club on Tuesday.
The Bearkats shot 2-under par, finishing one stroke ahead of Oral Roberts and ahead of Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, Texas State, South Alabama and Southern Illinois in the final standings.
Alex Malanga led the Kats, finishing fifth overall after posting a consistent final round of 71 with three birdies on the back nine and another on hole No. 7. Malanga totaled 14 birdies over three rounds and finished the tournament at 7-under par with rounds of 67-71-71.
In the team standings, No. 29 Texas A&M captured the title at 24-under par, while No. 48 Little Rock finished at 17-under, followed by Middle Tennessee at 16-under.
Grayson Petru recorded six birdies in the final round and finished tied for 19th at 3-under overall with rounds of 73-70-70. Jackson Hymer closed the tournament tied for 58th at 4-over par, posting rounds of 77-73-70 with birdies on the second and fourth holes in the final round.
Caleb Lumpkin delivered a consistent performance with rounds of 78-74-74 and a birdie on the 14th hole to finish tied for 84th at 10-over par. Sebastian May carded a birdie on the 13th hole and finished tied for 74th at 7-over par with rounds of 73-73-77.
Sam Houston will return to its home state next week to compete in the All-American Intercollegiate hosted by Houston at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, beginning Monday, March 16.
