LAFAYETTE, La. – The Sam Houston Bearkats men's golf team heads to the bayou this week to compete in the 41st Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club, hosted by the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
The two-day event has been played annually since 1985 and is the 10th oldest collegiate golf tournament in the country. The tournament will feature 54 holes of competition, with 36 holes scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start Monday and the final 18 holes set for a 7:30 a.m. tee time Tuesday.
The par-72 course measures 6,898 yards and features oak tree–lined fairways along with water hazards and bunkers guarding many of the greens. The course is ranked annually among the best in the state and is home to two former PGA Champions, Lionel Hebert and Jay Hebert.
The 16-team field is the largest in tournament history and includes the most Conference USA teams in a single event this season. Conference opponents in the field include Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State and the Bearkats.
Other teams competing include East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Lamar, No. 48 Little Rock, Michigan, North Texas, Oral Roberts, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, No. 29 Texas A&M, Texas State and host Louisiana.
Last season, Sam Houston placed fifth overall at +7 over 54 holes. Alex Malanga and Sebastian May both have experience on the course after competing in the event a year ago. Malanga finished tied for 49th with rounds of 75-77-73, while May placed 59th with scores of 76-75-77.
Sam Houston has competed in the tournament 19 times since its first appearance in 1988, finishing as high as second during the 2023–24 season. The Bearkats have produced one individual medalist in the event's history, with Kevin Boscamp claiming the title in 1988.
