Kats down Baylor for fourth straight win

HUNTSVILLE – Jeric Curtis had three RBI and the Sam Houston pitching staff struck out 10 as the Bearkats won their fourth game in a row on Tuesday night, 7-5 over Baylor at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (18-23) and Bears (22-18) were able to get the game in around looming inclement weather and it worked out for the home team as they were able to follow up their weekend sweep of NM State by avenging a loss from earlier this season in Waco.
Gabe Winans struck out four in 3.0 innings of his second straight midweek start and was the first of six arms to see the hill. Fellow freshman Mason Murphy got the win, his first, with 1.0+ innings of work ahead of Connor Mondey's 2.0 bridge innings which included three punchouts.
The Kats got a scoreless eighth from Jonathan Anders but turned to Zak Johnson for the third time in five days with a man on in the ninth and he proceeded to finish the job for his fifth save of the year.
Ryan Franden led off the game for the Sam Houston offense with a solo blast, but the Kats ultimately had to come from behind after Baylor plated three runs in the third and fourth innings. But the Kats tied it up at 3-3 with a 2-run single by Curtis in the fifth and followed with a sac fly from Cade Corcoran and scored on a Bear error for a 4-run inning which gave SHSU a 5-3 advantage.
Baylor had a real threat in the sixth inning, loading the bases with nobody out and prompting SHSU to go get Mondey from the pen. The Bears got a run home on a bases-loaded walk, but Sam Houston was able to turn a key double play to end the inning, minimize the damage and keep the lead.
The Kats took that momentum and ran with it, re-upping the lead to 7-4 with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on hits from both Curtis and Corcoran.
