BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Sam Houston closed out its series against Western Kentucky with a 7-4 loss Friday night at the WKU Softball Complex.

The Hilltoppers (27-8, 11-4 Conference USA) set the tone early, retiring the Bearkats (24-18, 9-6 CUSA) in order on just eight pitches in the opening inning. WKU quickly capitalized, as Kendle White led off the bottom half with a home run to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead.

Western Kentucky remained efficient at the plate and in the circle, holding Sam Houston scoreless through the second while extending its lead to 2-0.

The Bearkats tightened up defensively in the third with a scoreless inning before breaking through in the fourth. Peyton Helmly launched a solo home run to cut the deficit to one, but WKU responded immediately with a solo shot from Lauren Satterly to make it 3-1.

Sam Houston continued to chip away in the fifth. Jordan Peno doubled and later scored on a single from Ripley Welker to bring the Bearkats within one.

The Bearkats took their first lead in the sixth when Tricia Yarotsky delivered a two-run home run, putting Sam Houston ahead 4-3.

However, the advantage was short-lived. Western Kentucky answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs on six hits to reclaim a 7-4 lead.

Sam Houston was unable to rally in the seventh, as WKU secured the sweep with the three-game series victory.

The Bearkats will remain on the road for a midweek matchup against Stephen F. Austin on April 7 at 5 p.m. in Nacogdoches.
