RUSTON, La. – The Sam Houston Bearkats' freshmen took center stage on Saturday afternoon to lead the Kats to a 6-0 win over Louisiana Tech, avoiding a weekend sweep at JC Love Field.
The win, coupled with other results from around the league, puts the Kats (24-34, 13-17 CUSA) in as the No. 8 seed in next week's CUSA Tournament in Kennesaw, Ga.
LA Tech (33-23, 19-11 CUSA) entered the day with a path to the No. 2 seed but was shut down by the freshman pitching duo of Gabe Winans and Alarid en route to Sam Houston's first win at the Love Shack since 2005.
Sam Houston got seven hits on the day, with six hits and four runs coming with two outs, including two RBI apiece from freshmen Wes Baker and Kirby Orth. Baker finished with a 3-for-4 day with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth and eighth innings, while Orth's 2-run single gave Sam Houston an early 2-0 lead in the second.
Gabe Winans got the start on the hill and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts in 3.0 scoreless innings before fellow freshman Zach Alarid followed with 6.0 innings of relief to the finish line. He struck out three and did not walk a batter, needing just 67 pitches and retiring 18 of the 21 batters he faced for his first career win.
LA Tech, meanwhile, used four pitchers of its own with starter Luke Cooley taking the loss after allowing three runs in 5.0 innings.
