Bearkats battle Islanders in hard fought draw

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Sam Houston soccer team battled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at Dugan Soccer Stadium, with the Bearkats continuing to showcase a strong defensive effort while finding a late offensive spark.
Sam Houston kept the Islanders within reach throughout the contest, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi capitalized on a penalty kick to take the early advantage. The Bearkats (0-1-3) answered in the final five minutes when Siera Herbert found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Herbert, who appeared in a reserve role last season and recorded an assist, provided a key offensive moment for the Bearkats to level the match late.
Making her Bearkat debut, goalkeeper Samantha Rank turned in a strong performance between the posts, recording six saves on the night. The Islanders finished with 15 shots, including seven on goal.
Sam Houston generated 12 shots of its own, placing five on target. Lily Sargent-Burns, Gabrielle Gipson, Ashtyn Magnuson, and Kelsey Villatoro helped lead the Bearkats' offensive attack.
The result marked another outing in which Sam Houston's defense has held strong against an opponent recording 10 or more shots. It was also the third time a Bearkats' goalkeeper recorded at least five saves.
Sam Houston returns home for its home opener on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., when the Bearkats welcome UTRGV to Pritchett Field for the first match on the venue's new playing surface.
