Kats sweep team titles at Clifton Gilliard Invite

PRAIRIE VIEW — Sam Houston cross country swept the team titles Thursday at the Clifton Gilliard Cross Country Invite, with the women scoring 17 points and the men tallying 21 points.
The Bearkat women placed five runners among the top 10, led by Sophia Phillip, who captured the individual 5K title with a time of 18:39.7. Zerah Martinez followed in second at 18:50.2, while Avery Brown finished third at 18:53.6.
Aida Kane-Diallo placed fifth at 19:17.2 and Bailey Cheshire finished sixth at 19:21.9 to round out the Bearkats' scoring five. Freshman Shayla Brittain added a 10th-place finish in 21:23.4.
The women's team finished with 17 points, ahead of Texas Southmost College with 45 and Prairie View with 68.
On the men's side, Elijah Savage led the Bearkats with a second-place finish in the 8K, crossing the line in 26:11.7. Bryson Meredith followed in third at 26:27.0, while Joseph Simon placed fourth at 26:28.0.
Klever Torres finished fifth in 26:40.3, followed by Anthony Perez in seventh at 27:03.1 and Kelvin Sarfo in 10th at 27:36.6.
Sam Houston finished with 21 points to claim the men's team title, ahead of Prairie View with 51 points and Texas Southmost College with 54.
The Bearkats will return to action Oct. 16 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station.
