Bearkats return to Clifton Gilliard Invite

PRAIRIE VIEW — Sam Houston cross country returns to action Thursday at the Clifton Gilliard Cross Country Invite, with the Bearkats looking to build off their recent performances at the Texas A&M Invitational.
At Texas A&M, the Bearkat men finished 12th, led by Bryson Meredith, who placed 52nd in the 8K at 26:05.0. Elijah Savage followed in 59th at 26:12.2, while Klever Torres finished 73rd at 26:34.7. Joseph Simon also competed, placing 74th at 26:37.1.
The women's team finished 11th at Texas A&M, with Sophia Phillip leading the way in 55th at 18:58.2. Bailey Cheshire finished 59th at 19:06.2, followed by Zerah Martinez in 63rd at 19:08.3 and Avery Brown in 72nd at 19:16.8.
The Bearkats will return to a familiar course after a strong showing at last year's Clifton Gilliard Cross Country Invite. The women captured the team title with 17 points, finishing ahead of Prairie View (55) and St. Thomas (58), while the men placed second with 35 points, 10 points behind St. Thomas.
Sam Houston had three men's runners finish inside the top 10 last year, led by Edwin Rivera, who placed second in the 8K with a time of 25:19.5. Grant Currier finished fifth at 26:10.7, while Klever Torres placed seventh at 26:20.2.
The women's team claimed four of the top five individual spots, led by Sophia Phillip, who won the 5K in 18:16.6. Zerah Martinez placed third at 18:51.2, while Avery Brown finished fourth at 19:20.7. Naomi Green rounded out the Bearkats' top-10 finishers in seventh at 19:59.5.
The Bearkats will look to carry their recent momentum into Thursday's Clifton Gilliard Cross Country Invite in Prairie View.
