Shane Wedd enters his 12th overall season with Sam Houston in 2027 and his fourth as associate head coach. He has overseen the Bearkat offense since 2020, coaches the infielders and assists with recruiting and scheduling.
Wedd’s offense stole 127 bases in 2026, the program’s highest total since 1987 and 1 shy of its Division I record. Jeric Curtis, Hunter Alvord, Caleb Cotton and Jace Martinez each reached 20 stolen bases, marking the first time in program history that 4 Bearkats accomplished the feat in the same season.
Freshmen Wes Baker and Cade Corcoran each earned CUSA All-Freshman Team honors in 2026, finishing first and second among league freshmen in both home runs and RBI. Baker hit 8 home runs and drove in 39 runs, while Corcoran finished with 7 homers and 36 RBI. Baker tied the program’s freshman home run record and established a single-game freshman record with 7 RBI at Texas.
Wedd has helped develop a pair of first-round MLB Draft selections at Sam Houston. Colton Cowser was selected fifth overall by the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, the highest selection in program history, and Walker Janek was chosen by the Houston Astros with the No. 28 pick in 2024.
Janek’s final collegiate season featured the 2024 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, CUSA Defensive Player of the Year honors and first team All-America recognition from Baseball America, the ABCA and Perfect Game.
The Bearkat offense helped power Sam Houston to a 39–25 record, the WAC Tournament championship and the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional in 2023. The Kats scored 72 runs in 4 consecutive elimination games over 2 days to capture the tournament title, including a 21–1 victory over Utah Valley in the championship game.
Sam Houston averaged 8.4 runs per game in 2023. Tyler Davis and Joe Redfield each reached 100 hits, giving the program multiple players with 100 hits in a season for the first time. Redfield earned third team All-America honors from D1Baseball and the ABCA before being selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the fourth round of the MLB Draft.
In 2022, Wedd helped the Bearkats win the WAC Southwest Division championship. Carlos Contreras earned WAC Player of the Year and first team ABCA All-America honors after hitting .400 with 14 home runs and 89 RBI. Contreras led the nation with 1.59 RBI per game and finished second nationally in total RBI.
Cowser capped his Bearkat career in 2021 by earning Southland Conference Player of the Year honors, while Jack Rogers hit .367 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI before being selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the ninth round of the MLB Draft.
Wedd served as Sam Houston’s director of baseball operations in 2019 and a volunteer assistant in 2015, 2016 and 2018. He helped the Kats win Southland regular-season titles in 2016, 2018 and 2019, along with the 2016 tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Lafayette Regional.
Between his 2 stints in Huntsville, Wedd spent the 2017 season as head coach at Northeast Texas CC. He helped the Eagles double their win total from the previous season, hit 40 more home runs and lower the pitching staff’s ERA by 2 runs.
Wedd previously served as recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach at Northeast Texas CC from 2012–2014. He helped develop 12 all-conference hitters, and the 2012 Eagles won a conference championship while leading Region 14 with 128 stolen bases.
Before Northeast Texas, Wedd was the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach at Pratt CC from 2008–2011. He also spent 5 summers with the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod Baseball League from 2007–2011, working with hitters in his first season before overseeing the pitching staff. Falmouth reached the league championship series in 2007 and 2011.
Wedd began his career with the Kansas City Sluggers Baseball Club, serving as director of baseball operations from 2000–2004 and general manager in 2005 and 2006.
A native of Lawrence, Kan., Wedd lettered at Kansas from 1997–2000, playing catcher and first base and serving as team captain in his junior and senior seasons. He earned first team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2000 and received the Ron MacDonald Coaches Award for his leadership contributions on and off the field.
Wedd attended Lawrence HS, where he earned first team all-state honors in football and baseball and helped the Lions win state championships in both sports as a senior.
