Mike Walton joins the Sam Houston State staff in 2007 after working the past seventh season as an assistant coach of Eastern New Mexico University where he served as defensive coordinator.

Walton received his bachelor's degree in special education from Eastern New Mexico in 2000. He earned his master's degree in Sports Administration in 2002 at ENMU.

Walton was the starting middle linebacker for Eastern New Mexico during all 44 games in his college career from 1996 to 1999. He set an ENMU record with 515 career tackles. He totaled 58 tackles for losses, 15 sacks, forced 12 fumbles and intercepted three passes in his career.

He earned All-America honors in 1998 and 1999. The was a two-time first team All-Lone Star Conference honoree and was selected LSC South Division Defensive lineman-of-the-year in 1998.
