Scott Gernander

A former Bearkat basketball letterman with a strong family background
in coaching, Scott Gernander will serve as graduate assistant coach for
Sam Houston State this season.
Gernander played as a guard for both the 2004 and 2005 Bearkat teams, averaging seven minutes a game as a top reserve. He came to Sam Houston as a transfer from San Jacinto College where he played on teams that rolled up 60 victories, won two conference titles, and were national junior college runners-up. He averaged 8.1 points per game.
His father, Scott Gernander, Sr., has posted more than 500 victories in 20 seasons as head coach of the San Jacinto College Ravens. His San Jac teams have qualified for the NJCAA national tournament seven times including two national finals appearances.
Before playing at San Jac for his father, Scott was a first team All-District and second team All-Region guard for Coach Boyce Paxton at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena. He averaged 17.8 points as a senior.
Gernander received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2006. He served last season as a student assistant on Bob Marlin’s staff while completing his undergraduate degree.
