Named in honor of Dr. Elliott T. Bowers, who retired in 1989 after 20 years as president of Sam Houston State University, 14,000-seat Bowers Stadium has been the home of Bearkat football since 1986.

Prior to the opening of Bowers Stadium, the Bearkats played in the old stone stadium at historic Pritchett Field.

The largest crowd ever to see a game in Bowers Stadium - more than 16,000 - watched Sam Houston State defeat nationally-ranked Alcorn State and future Super Bowl quarterback Steve "Air" McNair in 1994 in a contest aired on ABC-TV.

Home to both Sam Houston State University's football and track programs, the stadium features a new AstroTurf 3D3-60 turf system installed during the summer of 2016. The new surface replaces the current AstroTurf field that was installed in June, 2007.

The 27,000 square-foot Ron Mafrige Field House adjacent to the stadium contains athletic department administrative offices, three dressing rooms, training room, team meeting rooms, and the Sam Houston State University Athletics Learning Enhancement Center.

Thanks to the generous support of Jim and Tonya Ferris and Ann Wismer and Michael Landolt of the Wismer Distributing Company in Baytown, and Kurt Stevenson of Stevenson Beer Distributing Company in Trinity and Anheuser-Busch, installation of a new state-of-the-art video board began at Bowers Stadium in July 2015. The football and track and field video scoreboard, which will replace the current board in Bowers Stadium, will be among the largest in the Football Championship Subdivision schools.  Dimensions are 32 feet, 4 inches by 79 feet, 6 inches, and the board features a full LED, 15 mm, 480 x 1584 HD video display.

It includes the capability for live video, custom animation with full-color graphics, and up-to-the-minute sports statistics, timing and results information.

Bowers Stadium also hosts several UIL high school football playoff games each season.
