DALLAS – Sam Houston junior pitcher Ryan Peterson has been named the CUSA Pitcher of the Week, per a release from league officials on Monday.Â
Peterson's weekly honor from the league comes after the Shiner, Texas native tossed a complete-game, 1-hit shutout on Friday night in the series opener against WKU. The Kats needed every one of his 111 pitches to scratch out the win over a Hilltopper team who won 46 games a year ago, winning 1-0 on the strength of Peterson's right arm and a solo home run from Hunter Alvord in the bottom of the seventh.Â
The effort was the first complete-game shutout for a Bearkat pitcher since Heath Donica punched out 14 Nevada in a 1-hit effort of his own on Opening Night in 2017. It also marked the second time in Peterson's career he has earned a weekly honor from the league, also doing so in 2025 after a win over NM State. Â
Peterson struck out the side in the first inning and finished with six strikeouts on the night, his lowest punchout total since the season opener at McNeese; however, he allowed just an infield induced weak contact throughout the night to stay efficient and reach the finish line, logging more than 7.0 innings for the first time in his collegiate career.Â
He took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before it was broken up by a 1-out infield single, the lone hit he allowed in the game. Â
The game lowered Peterson's ERA to 1.43 for the year, which ranks third in CUSA. He currently leads the league with 44.0 innings pitched and ranks second in strikeouts (57) and opposing batting average (.166). Â
Peterson and the Bearkats will next travel to No. 20 Texas A&M on Tuesday for a midweek game at Blue Bell Park before returning to CUSA play with a 3-game set at Missouri State, beginning Friday night in Springfield, Mo.Â
