"We had a slow start, especially in singles, but we came back to produce some good wins," SHSU head coach Jim Giachino said. "The team is working very hard on and off the courts, but we are not where we need to be from a competitive standpoint yet. It is always nice to secure wins over big programs such as SMU; it shows how rapidly our program is advancing, but to consistently play on or beyond that level will take a higher level of competitive desire. We will get there; we just haven't arrived yet.
"I was pleased to see how Irina and Peta performed playing their first tournament as a team. As they continue to gell as a doubles tandum they will be the class of the conference when those matches begin in the spring."
Next action for the Bearkats will be the Baylor Invitational in two weeks.
