Sam Houston State 's Jennie Sewell and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok have been named 2007 Capital One/Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year in their respective divisions. Songok and Sewell are among 34 athletes named to the 2007 All-Academic Teams. The all-academic team encompasses student-athletes who participated in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track and field.
A Dean's List Student from Rockwall, senior Jennie Sewell serves as an officer for the Sam Houston State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and sports a 3.60 GPA, majoring in political science and sociology.
Named the 2006 Outstanding Field Performer for indoor track and field, Sewell is a seven-time pole vault champion, including the 2006 Indoor (13-01.75) and 2007 Outdoor (13-05.00) pole vault titles. Winning 20 pole vault events during her SHSU career, Sewell won nine pole vault competitions in the 2007 outdoor season, including the 2007 NCAA Regional (13-11.75.) She recently finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
“If feels really good because it shows I succeeded in both the areas of being a student athlete,” Sewell said. “When I started school here I just had to prioritize everything. I stayed busy and I think I do better when I have a lot of stuff going on anyway.”
Joining Sewell on the list from Sam Houston State were; Dustin Joubert, a junior on the men's team from Coppell who had a 4.00 GPA as a Kinesiology major; Shannon Brown a sophomore on the womens team from LaMarque who had a 3.32 GPA as a Psychology & Criminal Justice major and Regina Offord, a sophomore from Crandall who put together a 3.53 GPA as a Health & Biology major.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition.
The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
