
Volleyball upsets Lamar in five

HUNTSVILLE ? Anna Ferguson totaled 17 kills and Carli Kolbi added 14 to lead Sam Houston State to a five-set upset victory over Southland Conference West Division leader Lamar Tuesday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats won 25-19 16-25 25-23 19-25 15-12 to up their record to 13-17 for the season and 8-6 in Southland Conference action. Lamar feel to 13-10 for the year and 11-3 in league play.
Sam Houston started strong, jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the first set. Lamar rallied to cut the margin to three points, 21-18, but an attack error and a Shamira Washington service ace put the Kats back in control. Anna Ferguson's kill ended the set at 25-19. The Bearkats never trailed in the set.
After the Bearkats won two of the first three points in the second set, the Cardinals went on a 16-8 run to build a seven point lead. Lamar won the second frame by nine points.
In the third set, Sam Houston built an 18-12 lead, then had to hold off another charge by the Cardinals. Lamar cut the margin to one point, 24-23, before dropping the set on an attack error by Kaci Brewer.
After two early lead changes, Lamar went on a 7-1 run to go up 15-9 and eventually win the fourth set 25-19.
The Cardinals appeared in control in the final set, starting with a 5-1 lead. Sam Houston tied the match 11-11 after a kill by Anna Ferguson. The Kats won the next four points on Courtney Laskowski's serve, then, on a side-out at 14-12, scored on a Lamar error to win.
“This was just a crazy, up-and-down, back-and-forth match,” SHSU head coach Brenda Gray. “I'm so proud of this team. They just never quit. This is the second time this year we've knocked off a team in first place. If we keep playing this way, we can be a team no one wants to play in the tournament next week.”
Sam Houston totaled 59 kills to Lamar's 56. Kaci Brewer led the Cardinals with 15 kills and Shalayne Blythe added 13.
The Bearkats close out the regular season with two home matches, hosting Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Thursday and Northwestern State Saturday at 2 p.m .
