Women's basketball loses 73-52 to SMU

 

DALLAS ? Led by freshman Britni Martin with 12 points, Sam Houston State fell to host team SMU 73-52 in the first round of the Mustang Women's Basketball Classic at Moody Coliseum Friday night at Moody Coliseum.

 

The loss dropped the Bearkats to 1-4 for the season. Sam Houston State will play Fresno State in the third place game of the tournament Saturday at 5 p.m. Fresno State lost 70-69 to North Carolina-Charlotte in the other semifinal game Friday.

 

 Every player scored for SMU as the Mustangs picked up their first victory of the year. SMU now stands 1-3. The Mustangs were led by Dee Wells with 12 points and Brittany Gilliam with 11.

 

Whitney Smith also scored in double figures for the Bearkats with 11 points.

 

Sam Houston forced 21 Mustang turnovers while compiling only 13 miscues. SMU's turnovers helped the Bearkats build an early lead but a late first half run put SMU up to stay. Sam Houston led 21-17 with 5:51 to play in the first half. But the Mustangs went on a 19-2 run to take a 36-23 lead at halftime.

 

The Mustangs out-rebounded Sam Houston 51 to 35. Sam Houston hit only 29 percent from the floor (20-of-72) while SMU connected on 27-of-55 for 49 percent shooting. The Mustangs also had a big advantage at the free throw line, hitting 15 of 21 foul shots while Sam Houston was 4-of-10.

 

Sam Houston is in the midst of an eight-game, month-long road swing. The Bearkats will travel to Auburn next week after play in the tournament in Dallas.
