Bearkats host North Texas Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Sam Houston softball team plays host to North Texas in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Sunday at Bearkat Softball Stadium in what will be their only home appearance for more than a month. The games originally were scheduled for Saturday but were moved due to the threat of rain.
The Bearkats opened the season last Saturday with a pair of 13-0 victories over Prairie View, then fell to the No. 2 ranked Aggies Wednesday 6-0.
Preseason favorites in the 2008 Southland Conference race according to a poll of the league's head coach, Sam Houston hit .510 in its doubleheader against Prairie View Saturday. The Kats collected 25 hits in 49 at bats with 10 of the 17 players who came to the plate picking up multilpe hits.
In Wednesday's game, strong pitching and good defense kept the Aggies scoreless for three innings before a five-run explosion in the fourth. But Texas A&M held the Bearkats hitless. Hailey Wiginton proved to be SHSU's only baserunner with a walk in the first inning.
Following the North Texas doubleheader, the Bearkats hit the road for games in Houston, a tournament at Texas A&M, and two tournaments in Florida over spring break. Sam Houston will also open Southland Conference play on the road.
Sam Houston State is 2-0 at home. In the opener vs. Prairie View Saturday, freshman Whitney Wilson went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run in her first college game. Senior Mandy Huckabee blasted two home runs in the opener as Sam Houston tied a school record with four homers in the contest. Junior Brandi Crnkovic produced the third perfect game in SHSU softball history, striking out five. Sophomore Morgan Mikulin picked up a shutout in the second game, giving up only four hits and fanning four batters.
