SAN ANTONIO ? Sam Houston State snapped a two-game slide on the road in Southland Conference play with a 70-54 victory Wednesday night against Texas-San Antonio.
The Beakats (17-4, 5-3 SLC) opened the game with the first six points of the contest and never looked back. They led by as many as 13 in the first half, eventually building a 19-point lead in the final 20 minutes.
“We got of to a quick start. We played good defense and outrebounded them to lead from wire to wire,” SHSU head coach Bob Marlin said. “Our defense was fine. We held them to 31 percent shooting in the first half and 39 in the second. We also outrebounded them 42-18, which was one of our goals."
Four Kats scored in double figures with Shamir McDaniel leading the way with 13. Ryan Bright added 12, John Gardiner 11 and DeLuis Ramirez 10.
Bright, the nation's second leading rebounder, pulled down nine boards to lead both teams. The Bearkats in fact dominated the Roadrunners on the rebounding end. SHSU pulled down 42 boards to just 18 for UTSA.
The Kats shot a blistering 59.3 percent from the floor, including a 61.5 percent clip in the second half. The Kats only went to the line twice the entire game, hitting 2-of-4.
The Bearkats will return home on Saturday to take on the defending Southland Conference champions Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
