Baseball surges past TAMUCC 11-9 Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI ? Shortstop Ryan Weber went 2-for-4, batting in five runs including a three-RBI double that brought in the winning tally as Sam Houston State defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 11-9 Saturday in the third and final game of the Bearkats' Southland Conference baseball series with the Islands this weekend.

TAMUCC took two of the three games, winning Thursday and Friday night. The victory Saturday put Sam Houston State's season record at 13-8. The Bearkats stand 4-2 in Southland Conference play. Corpus Christi dropped to 5-15 for the year and 2-4 in league action.

Ryan Trevino went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Keith Stein was 2-for-5 with a double.

Sam Houston State totaled 16 hits and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had 14. The Islanders held a 4-3 lead after scoring three runs in the second and one in the third. But Dallas Gallant limited TAMUCC to just three hits in four and a third innings to pick up the victory on the mound in relief. Gallant is 1-2 for the year.

Zach Neal was the starter, giving up eight hits and four runs in two-and-a-third innings. Adam Albright and Casey Springer pitched the final inning with Springer picking up his fourth save of the year.

Sam Houston scored two runs in the fifth and added five more in the seventh. Weber also had a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Todd Sebek's hitting streak ended Saturday as the senior outfielder went 0-for-6. Sebek flew out four times to the outfield and grounded out twice. He had hit safely in all the Bearkats previous 20 games this year and the final game of the 2007 season.

After a Tuesday road non-conference game at Dallas Baptist Tuesday, Sam Houston State will return home to play host to Texas Southern University Wednesday night at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bearkats will meet Texas State-San Marcos in a home Southland series beginning Friday night.
