Bobcats edge Kat baseballers 8-7

HUNTSVILLE ? Sam Houston State rallied from 7-1 down to tie the game 7-7 in the eighth inning, but Adam Witek slammed an RBI single through shortstop in the top of the ninth to give Texas State-San Marcos an 8-7 victory Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.

 

The win evened the Southland Conference baseball series at one game apiece. Sam Houston won 4-2 Friday night. The Bobcats upped their record to 13-9 for the season and 5-3 in SLC action. The Bearkats are 15-10 for the year and 5-3 in league play.

 

Sam Houston struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Trevino and Heath Pugh.

 

Texas State-San Marcos bounced back for four runs in the top of the third inning. Lance Loftin started the inning with a double to right center and was sacrificed to third on a bunt. Bret Atwood singled to score Loftin. Thomas Field singled, then Paul Goldschmidt smashed his eighth home run of the year to put the Bobcats up 4-0.

 

Will Skelton, who replaced Sam Houston starting pitcher Dallas Gallant in the fourth inning, walked two batters and hit a third before he was replace by Guillaume Duguay. The junior right hander walked Atwood and Field for two runs before he was replaced by Justin Jackson. The inning ended with the Bobcats up 6-1 after Adam Witek grounded into a double play.

 

Jerry Cervantes hit a home run off the scoreboard in left field in the top of the sixth to put Texas State-San Marcos up 7-1.

 

Matt Shelton  took over on the mound for the Bearkats in the seventh and pitched the final three innings. He was the losing pitcher, dropping to 1-2 for the year.

 

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bearkats loaded the bases on singles by Ryan Trevino and Seth Hammock and a walk to Heath Pugh. But Daniel Nottebart hit into a double play to end the inning.

 

Jaimie Rohlmeier and Ryan Weber started a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh with back to back singles. The two advanced to second and third on an error and Todd Sebek brought in Rohlmeier with a sacrifice fly to right field. Keith Stein, Bobby Verbick and Ryan Trevino followed with singles, Stein and Trevino each producing RBIs. Seth Hammock added an RBI double and Trevino scored on a ground out as Sam Houston cut the Bobcat margin to 7-6.

 

Steven Siers went six innings as the starter for the Bobcats, striking out five Bearkats while giving up eight hits.

 

Nick Zaleski's pinch hit home run to left field to lead off the eighth inning tied the game 7-7.1b

 

Witek sharp single to shortstop scored Field to give the Bobcats back the lead.
