
Women's 4x400 relay wins Southland honor

Tiffany Singleton, Jessica Fisher, Monika May, and Desiree Taylor have been named as Southland Conference women's track and field athletes of the week after finishing third in the 4x400 relay at the Texas Relays April 5.
The quartet ran an NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:38.73. The mark also was a Sam Houston State school record.
Southern California won the event with ha 3:34.39 clocking while Alabama-Birmingham was runner-up at 3:38.51. Sam Houston State defeated relays from Kansas State, North Texas, Abilene Christian, and Texas Tech.
Singlton is a senior from Harker Heights, Fisher a sophomore from Houston / Worthing, May a freshman from Stafford, and Taylor a junior from Converse Judson.
The 4x400 relay was not the only group of Bearkats to perform well at the Texas Relays.
The SHSU women's distance medley relay team of Whitney Rister, Monika May, Dakota Stewart, and Allison Ferries placed eighth with a clocking of 12:10.70.
Fisher, Singleton, Taylor, and Regina Offord combined for a 1:37.92 mark to place 11th in the women's 4x200 meter relay.
The men's distance medley of Julius Michael, Michael Courtney, George Whitney, and Taylor Ray were eighth with a time of 10:11.12.
There were also several top individual performances by Bearkats at the Texas Relays.
Allison Ferries placed sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:01.19.
Travis Matthews was eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 6.75 inches (an NCAA regional qualifying mark), and Kendall Bass was 11th in the women's hammer with a toss of 172 feet, three inches.
Lane Dennis (52.21) and Jay Newman (54.79) were 11th and 32nd, respectively in the 400 meter hurdles preliminaries.
Dakota Stewart (1:02.03) and Tiana Lee (1:02.26) placed 17th and 18th in the women's 400 meter hurdle competition.
Jessica Fisher (11.95) and Regina Offord (12.13) were 28th and 40ths, respectively in the 100 meter dash.
Chris Cralle finished 7th in hammer with a school record and regional qualifying mark of 194-8
Dennis's 400 hurdle mark on Thursday of 52.21 was an NCAA regional qualifying time.
Michael Courtney ran a 45.9 400m split on the Men's Distance Medley
"We finished the meet with a bang with the school record 4x400," SHSU head coach Curtis Collier said. "It was an exciting race which we led for parts of the race. I'm very proud of these girls. We are moving in the right direction to compete for the SLC outdoor team title on our home track in May."
