HUNTSVILLE, TX ? Corey Allmond scored a career best 25 points to lead Sam Houston State to a 73-62 Southland Conference men's basketball victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Up by only three points, 65-62, with 1:35 to play, the Bearkats ended the game with an 8-0 run, all on free throws. Ashton Mitchell hit three, Lance Pevehouse and Barkley Falkner two each and Josten Crow one.
Two other Bearkats scored in double figures with Drae Murray scoring 15 and Mitchell 13. Mitchell also had 10 assists.
Chris Cyprian led Southeastern Louisiana with 12 points.
Sam Houston upped its season record to 7-8 and is 1-1 in Southland Conference action. Southeastern Louisiana dropped to 7-9 for the year and 1-2 in SLC play.
The victory was Head Coach Bob Marlin's 189th win at Sam Houston, tying him with Archie Porter for the most career coaching victories by a Bearkat men's basketball coach. Marlin owns a 189-119 record at Sam Houston in his 11 seasons since 1999. Porter coached the Kats to a 189-128 mark in 1965 through 1975.
The Bearkats jumped out to a 12 point lead, 25-13 with 7:45 to play in the first half and were up at intermission by eight, 37-29.
Southeastern Louisiana started the second period with a 14-7 run, cutting the Bearkat lead to one, 44-43 on a free throw by Warrell Span with 13:59 to play. The Lions could come no closer with Sam Houston holding on for the victory.
