HOUSTON, TX ? Tiana Lee, Ty Spiller and Pashe Moore all made the finals in the hurdles to highlight action for the Sam Houston State women's track and field team in their first indoor action of the 2009 season at the Leonard Hilton Memorial hosted by the University of Houston Friday.
Lee placed four in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.70 seconds. Spiller was seventh (8.87) and Moore ninth (9.08).
“We're excited about the performances of this trio,” SHSU track and field head coach Curtis Collier. “We project them to score alot of points in the women's hurdles in the Southland Conference.”
Desiree Taylor had the Bearkat women's top individual finish as the runner-up in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 58.12 seconds. Monika May was fourth in the 400 (58.88) and Brittany Henson placed ninth (1:00.14)
Freshman Ambra McCuin performed well in her first college meet with a fifth place finish in the women's triple jump (38 feet, 5 inches).
Regina Offord was a finalist in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.72 seconds.
Dess Meek placed fourth in the high jump (5' 7”) and seventh in the long jump (18' 4.25”). Kris Wulfson and Kristi Hermes placed in the top 10 in the pole vault both with marks of 10' 10”.
“We had some bright spots in our first meet,” Collier said, “but, overall we are not quite where I thought we were. We have alot of areas to improve upon. Specifically, we need to insure that we get healthy and stay healthy. Right now, at the beginning of our indoor season, we have too many key people out with small injuries. Secondly, we need more of our new athletes to step up their performance levels. I fully expect each of these to happen in the coming weeks as we adjust our workloads to reduce and/or recover from our injuries and as the newcomers get more acclimated to indoor and collegiate competition.”
