The game was tied five times, the last at 36-36 with 16:02 to play. Sparked by a three point basket by Leisa Ailshie at the 14:32 mark, the Bearkats went on a 15-2 run. Martin put the Kats up 51-38 on a jumper with 12:22 to play. Sam Houston's biggest lead was 17 points, 67-50, at 5:55 on a lay-up by Martin.
“This young team is playing with such maturity right now,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “We've really got a good rotation going. Five players in double figures is something we haven't had in awhile, but this team is really balanced and play really unselfish ball. This was a big win for us.”
Sam Houston lost to Texas State-San Marcos 99-60 and 70-54 on the way to a 1-27 mark in 2007-08. But this year's Bearkat women's squad now has won three of its last four games and stands 2-1 in Southland Conference action. Sam Houston is 5-11 for the year.
The Bobcats dropped to 8-8 for the season and 2-2 in Southland action.
