Sam Houston State senior Irina Sotnikova has been named the Southland Conference's women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Following a fall campaign that saw her compete in both singles and doubles without suffering a defeat, Sotnikova continued her winning ways during the Bearkats' spring season-opening match Sunday in Houston against No. 68-ranked Rice.
In her No. 1 singles match against Rice's Julie Chao, the Riga, Latvia, product bounced back from a first set loss to win the second set and take a super tiebreaker to win 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12-10). Later in doubles, Sotnikova and teammate Peta Taylor defeated Chao and Ana Guzman, 8-4.
Including fall tournament play, Sotnikova boasts singles and doubles records of 11-0 and 12-0, respectively, and she stands as Sam Houston State's all-time winningest tennis player.
Next action for the Sam Houston State women's tennis team will be a non-conference dual match with Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. at the McAdams Tennis Center on the SHSU campus.
