CORPUS CHRISTI ? Brittany Brooks and Bre Agnew each scored 17 points to lead the Sam Houston women's basketball team in an 88-76 Southland Conference loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night.
Agnew also led the Kats with 10 rebounds. Ray Alexander added 11 points as the Sam Houston women remained winless on the road in league play. The Bearkats are 6-13 for the season and 3-3 in Southland action.
Shayle Montgomery led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 22 points.
The Islanders led from buzzer to buzzer, jumping out to a 25-7 lead midway through the first half. Sam Houston bounced back to outscore TAMUCC 30-17 in the final 9:50 of the first period. Alexander scored a layup with 21 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 42-37 at intermission.
Sam Houston continue to surge early in the second half as Whitney Smith's layup at 18:23 cut the Islander margin to two points, 45-43.
The Kats came no closer as Corpus Christi went on a 12-4 run to build a 10 point lead, 57-47, and upped that lead to as many as 17 points. The closest Sam Houston came the rest of the game was nine points, 81-72, on a layup by Britni Martin with two minutes to play.
Sam Houston State returns to Johnson Coliseum Wednesday night to host Texas-San Antonio in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
