Women's tennis chalks up big wins in Waco

WACO - Sam Houston State's women's tennis team posted outstanding results against regionally and nationally ranked opponents at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals hosted by Baylor University at the Waco Tennis Center Friday through Sunday.
The Bearkats' Italian duo of sophomore Giorgia Pozzan and Federica Denti defeated doubles teams from Texas Tech and Baylor before falling to third-seeded Pavi Francis and Marta Lesniak of SMU 8-5.
Pozzan and Denti knocked off Baylor's ninth-seeded duo of Karolnia Filipiak and Taylor Ormond 8-5 after defeating Lorena Aviles and Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech.
Pozzan also distinguished herself in singles action, winning three matches in Friday's qualifying round, then winning one match in the main draw before falling to players from Rice and TCU.
Denti defeated Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech 6-4 6-2 then lost to the number one seeded Lenka Broosova of Baylor 6-3 6-2.
Freshman Laura Peschke won over Sarah Adams of UTSA, then lost to Lorena Aviles of Texas Tech. Cally Woerner knocked off Sarah Burton of UTPA 6-1 6-2 before falling to Nikola Matovicova of UTA.
The Sam Houston State women have one more tournament remaining on their fall schedule. The Bearkats will compete in the University of Houston Invitational in November.
