Ray Alexander scored a career high 25 points to lead Sam Houston in an 82-62 loss to Rice in the finals of the Rice Invitational Tournament Saturday night in Tutor Fieldhouse.
Jackie Stanley led the Owls with 36 points and 14 rebounds as Rice won the tournament title. Stanley was voted as tournament Most Valuable Player and Alexander was one of five players named all-tournament.
Also on the all-tournament squad were Bianca Torre of UT-Pan American, Rachel Jones of Jackson State and Morgan Mayse of Rice. Brittany Brooks scored 14 points and Whitney Smith added 10 to give Sam Houston (3-4) three players in double figures.
Rice never trailed, jumping out to a 12-2 lead to start the game and leading by as many as 16 points in the first half before taking a 41-30 margin into the locker room at halftime.
The Owls dominated under the boards, out-rebounding Sam Houston 54 to 38 and out-scoring Sam Houston 40-28 in the paint. Alexander had a hot hand from the perimeter, going 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the three point arc.
Sam Houston's next action is a road game at New Orleans Friday.
