BEAUMONT -- Freshman forward Britni Martin scored 31 points to lead the Sam Houston State women as the Kats fell to Lamar 89-88 in overtime Wednesday night.
Martin went 7-of-12 from three point range while Ray Alexander added 18 points and Brittany Brooks scored 17 for the Bearkats.
The contest was tied 10 times with 14 lead changes.
Alexander's lay-up with 1:43 to play gave the Kats a 79-76 lead. But Nikki Williams, who scored 26 points for Lamar, tied the contest 79-79 with 19 seconds to play. L
Williams blocked a Leasa Ailshie layup with 11 seconds and Martin missed a three pointer in the final moments of regulation and the contest went into extra time.
Sam Houston quickly jumped out to a seven point lead, going up 86-79 with 2:58 left in overtime. But the Cardinals answered with an 8-0 run to take an 87-86 lead with 46 seconds to play. The Lamar run was capped off by an Ang Green. Martin responded for the Bearkats with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining to put SHSU up 88-87.
Hill drained the jumper when Green found her at the top of the key with 17 seconds to play, giving Lamar the 89-88 advantage. With 17 ticks left on the clock Sam Houston was able to set up one last chance at pulling out the win.
Martin inbounds the ball to Brittany Brooks and received the ball back on the right wing where she worked her way towards the paint, firing up a contested jumper which bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Hill scored 26 points to lead Lamar. Green added 19 points.
The loss dropped Sam Houston State to 4-7 in Southland Conference action. The Bearkats stand 7-17 for the season.
