SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Britni Martin scored 16 points and junior Whitney Smith added 10 to lead the Sam Houston State women's basketball team as the Bearkats dropped a Southland Conference contest to Texas-San Antonio 85-54 Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Convocation Center.
UTSA (17-8, SLC 10-2) never trailed, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage in the first three minutes and building a 47-20 lead at intermission. UTSA's largest lead was 37 points with 1:38 to play.
Four Roadrunners scored in double figures led by Onika Anderson with 19 points. Ryba Pawlaczyk added 18.
The taller UTSA squad out-scored Sam Houston 44-18 in the paint, grabbed 60 rebounds to the Kats' 29 and limited SHSU to 27 percent shooting from the field (17-of-62).
Anderson accounted for 23 of the Roadrunners' 60 boards.
Bre Agnew scored eight points for Sam Houston and Lydia Gonzales added six points.
The Sam Houston State women return home to play host to McNeese State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The contest is a crucial one for the Bearkat women's hopes of being one of the eight teams in the 2009 Southland Conference post-season women's tournament to be played in Katy March 11-14.
