HUNTSVILLE ? Whitney Smith put Sam Houston ahead with a basket with 1:32 to play and Brittany Brooks added two free throws with six seconds to go to ice a Southland Conference women's basketball victory for the Bearkats as SHSU defeated Central Arkansas 62-58 at Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Sam Houston State (7-14, SLC 4-4) shot only 36 percent (18-of-50) from the floor and trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but fought back to earn the victory. The contest featured nine lead changes.
The Bearkats were led by Britni Martin with 15 5points. Bre Agnew scored 12 points and Brooks added 10 for Sam Houston.
Central Arkansas (6-16, SLC 2-7) was led by Jamye Adair with 14 points and Destinee Rogers and Meaghen Kelleybrew, each with 11.
Two three point baskets by Martin, one at 11:30 to play and the next at 10:57, sparked the Bearkats' second half comeback. Sam Houston built a 47-40 lead after the two treys.
UCA came back to tie the contest 58-58 with 3:28 to play, but did not score again the contest.
“This wasn't a really pretty game, but it was a victory,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said," I was proud of the way the girls kept fighting even though everything was going perfect. Central Arkansas fought hard as well. It was an exciting game."
