SAN MARCOS -- Senior catcher Mark Wyatt blasted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to power Sam Houston to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Texas State-San Marcos in the first game of a Southland Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats bounced back for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap to split in the doubleheader. The third and deciding game of the weekend series will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
The Bearkats trailed 5-3 going into the top of the eighth in the first contest. Senior third baseman Seth Hammock, who went 2-for-3 in the game, picked up one of three RBIs to cut the margin to 5-4 before Wyatt's three-run blast.
Junior pitcher Jacob Howard spread seven hits over six and two thirds innings, striking out five Bearkats as the SHSU starter. Guillaume Duguay (2-1) picked up the win in relief, finishing the seventh inning. Sean Weatherford earned his fourth save of the season, finishing the final two innings on the mound.
Braeden Riley led the Kats at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader, going 3-for-5.
Sam Houston out-hit the Bobcats in the second game of the doubleheader 12-8, but timely hitting by Texas State-San Marcos allowed the home team to prevail.
First baseman Paul Goldschmidt put Texas State-San Marcos up 2-0 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
First baseman Nick Zaleski, who went 2-for-5 in the second contest, evened the game 2-2 with a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning.
The Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a lead they never relinguished. Keith Kopychinski brought in the go-ahead run with a single.
Dallas Gallant was the losing pitcher for the Bearkats, giving up seven hits and six runs in four and two thirds innings. Matt Shelton and Justin Jackson pitched in relief.
Riley led the Kats at the plate again, going 3-for-5 with an RBI in the ninth inning. Heath Pugh was 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
