Softball defeats Central Arkansas 4-2

CONWAY, AR ? Hailey Wiginton and Whitney Wilson each hit home runs in their first at bats to end an 18-inning scoreless streak for Sam Houston State and lead the Bearkats to a 4-2 Southland Conference softball victory over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Farris Field.

Sam Houston was shut out twice Saturday, falling 2-0 in seven innings and 1-0 in 11 innings, but bounced back Sunday to take a quick three-run lead in the top of the first. Wiginton started the contest with a solo shot to right field. After a single by Amy Brown, Wilson homer to left field.

The Sugar Bears responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, then were held scoreless the rest of the game as Brandi Crnkovic allowed only three hits in six and two thirds innings of relief work to earn the victory in the pitching circle.

Sam Houston totaled nine hits with Wiginton going 3-for-4. The Bearkats added a fourth run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Sarah Parich.

The victory upped Sam Houston's season record to 23-21 for the year. The Bearkats are tied for seventh place in the Southland standings with Central Arkansas. Both own 12-12 league marks.

The top six regular season finishers earn a berth in the Southland Conference post-season tournament to be held in Lake Charles, LA, May 7-9.

Sam Houston is chasing Stephen F. Austin (13-9) and Texas-Arlington (14-11) in the standings.

Next action for the Bearkat softball team will be a non-conference road trip to Texas A&M for a single game Wednesday evening.
