
Bearkat baseball sweeps Player of Week honors; receiving votes in NCBWA poll

Sam Houston State swept the Southland Conference weekly baseball awards for April 20, 2009.
Bearkat second baseman Braeden Riley has been named the hitter of the week while right-hander Sean Weatherford has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Also on Monday the Bearkats returned to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30 Poll, getting metioned in the also receiving votes section.
In five games last week, Riley was 15-for-25 (.600) with four doubles and a triple to drive in three runs and score nine. The sophomore from Woodville, Texas, was 3-for-5 in each of the five games, which included non-conference victories over Houston and Texas Southern. He was 9-for-15 in the three-game conference sweep of Nicholls State and hit two doubles in the series finale. Riley is batting .402 this season to rank sixth in the Southland. His 74 hits paces the conference.
Weatherford hurled the first complete game of the season for Sam Houston State Friday in the opening game of the Nicholls State series. He allowed only five hits and struck out eight in the 6-0 victory. The freshman from Bryan, Texas, walked one and limited opposing batters to a .161 batting average. Weatherford's 3.23 earned run average this season ranks fourth in the conference.
Sam Houston State won all five games last week to run its win streak to seven games. The Bearkats are 25-13 overall and 14-7 in the Southland Conference and are tied for second with UT Arlington (22-17, 14-7 Southland), just one and a half games behind Texas State (27-10, 15-5 Southland) in the standings with 12 conference games to play.
Sam Houston State begins a seven-game home series Tuesday night when the Kats play host to the Baylor Bears at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
