SHSU men finish seventh at Southland

KERRVILLE, TX -- Led by Fergal Rafferty who jumped from 20th place after two rounds to finish tied for eighth in the individual standings, Sam Houston State placed seventh at the Southland Conference men's golf championship which ended Wednesday.
The 54-hole tournament was played on the par 72, 7,304-yard course at The Club at Comanche Trace.
After a first round six-over 78 during Monday's rain-soaked and lightning delayed competition, Rafferty bounced back to consecutive two-under 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday to tied for eighth place in the event.
Justin Hardin of Lamar, Zack Fischer of Texas-Arlington and Cedric Scotto of Southeastern Louisiana tied for first place, all with four-under totals of 212.
The Lamar Cardinals won the team trophy with a 54-hole score of 290-277-292--859. Texas-Arlington was second, 10 strokes back at 869.
Southeastern Louisiana placed third with an 871 total, followed by Texas-San Antonio 884, Texas State-San Marcos 894, Stephen F. Austin 895, Sam Houston 896, Central Arkansas 897, Nicholls State 934 and McNeese State 935.
Sam Houston State's final day 296 team total was the third best score on Wednesday. Southeastern Louisiana shot 291 and Lamar 292.
Other Bearkat scores and finishes include Scott Kelly 14th (75-72-74--221); Caleb LeNorman 27th (75-74-78--227); J. R. Hurley 36th (81-75-77--233) and Beau Willis 39th (81-79-75--235).
