Weatherford, Duguay SLC Co-Pitchers of Week

Sam Houston State right-handers freshman Sean Weatherford of Bryan and senior Guillaume Duguay of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, in Canada, have been voted as Southland Conference Co-Pitchers of the Week by the league' sports information directors.
Weatherford and Duguay combined to strike out 22 batters in a 7-2 league victory over Central Arkansas in Conway, AR, Saturday afternoon, setting Southland Conference and Sam Houston State records for most strike outs in one game.
Weatherford was the game winner, striking out 12 Bears in five innings. Duguay picked up his first save of the season, fanning 10 batters in the final four innings.
The achievement marked the first time in modern NCAA Division I baseball history that two pitchers have record double digit strike outs in one nine-inning game. Two pitchers from Old Dominion each had double digit strike outs in a game in 2006, but it was an 18-inning contest. ODU's Jason Godin struck out 11 in eight and one third innings and Dana Arrowood added 12 more in nine and two thirds work.
Louisiana-Monroe formerly held the record for most strike outs in one game with 20 against Louisiana Tech in 1999. All 20 strike outs were by starting pitcher Ben Sheets who threw a complete game.
Sam Houston's prior school record also was 20 strike outs. Again, the 20 strike outs were part of a complete game performance by Ron Kainer in a 1974 Bearkat victory over Adams State.
Weatherford upped his 2009 record to 6-5 for the year. His season strike out total now stands at 60 in 60 and two-thirds innings pitched. Duguay has fanned 31 batters in 28 innings this season.
Sam Houston State will complete Southland Conference regular season play with a three-game series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Don Sanders Stadium this week. The series begins Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Bearkats have already clinched a berth in the 2009 Southland Conference post-season tournament to be held May 20-23 at Corpus Christi.
