Dess Meek earns another NCAA Finals berth

Dess Meek will return to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet in Fayetteville June 10-13 after placing fourth in the NCAA Regional high jump in Norman, OK, Saturday.
The Bearkat sophomore from Newton leaped 5' 10" in the regional competition. Meek was the defending regional champion. This will be Meek's third appearance in the NCAA Nationals as she competed at outdoor nationals last spring and, this winter, became the first Sam Houston State student-athlete to earn a berth in the NCAA Indoor national finals.
Three other Bearkat women competed in the regional meet this weekend. In the women's 400 hurdles preliminaries, Tiana Lee just missed the finals after posting a 1:00.23.
“Tiana had her second-best time and finished 10th. It was a good effort,” Head Coach Collier said.
In the women's 800-meter run, Devyn Mitchell finished 17th with a time of 2:14.94.
“Devyn was just in a very good field of athletes,” Collier added.
Sophomore hurdler Tywaniesha Spiller had a slightly slower time in Friday's 100-meter hurdles preliminaries than in the Southland Outdoor championships to finish with a time of 13.92 for 13th place.
“Ty ran a good race,” Collier said. “She beat the SLC champ, so that was good to see. It wasn't as fast as what she ran in conference, but she's ran consistently at a high level. The fact that she's only a sophomore is good for us.”
