Four Bearkat women earn SLC academic honor

Bridget Costello, Kristi Hermes, Tiana Lee and Dess Meek of Sam Houston State have been selected to the 2009 Academic All-Southland Conference women's track and field team.
Costello, captain of the 2008 Sam Houston State cross country squad and a distance runner in outdoor competition this spring, has compiled a 3.67 overall grade point average as an education major.
Hermes, a junior biology major with a 3.53 overall grade point average, earned All-Southland Conference honors in the pole vault both indoors and outdoors. She was the outdoor runner-up in the pole vault with a mark of 11' 7.75.”
Lee, a senior education major who has compiled a 3.41 grade point average as a Bearkat, earned All-Southland honors as the 400 meter hurdles champion this spring. She also placed fourth in the SLC 100 hurdles. She finished 10th at the NCAA regionals at Oklahoma in the 400 hurdles.
Meek, a sophomore kinesiology major with a 3.17 grade point average, became the first Sam Houston State student-athlete to earn a berth in the NCAA indoor national meet after winning the Southland indoor high jump. Outdoors, she was the runner-up in the high jump and fifth in the long jump at the Southland meet and placed fourth at the NCAA outdoor regional.
The Academic All-Southland Conference team is voted upon by the league's head coaches, academic coordinators and sports information directors. To be nominated for the honor squad, a student-athlete must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 and be a starter or front line reserve who has played at least half of the season. True freshmen and first year transfers are not eligible for selection to the squad.
