
Tennis posts wins at Rice Invitational (w/Video)

Sophomore Giorgia Pozzan and freshman Federicka Denti posted impressive victories in both singles and doubles as the Sam Houston State women's tennis team opened its fall schedule at the Rice Invitational in Houston Friday and Saturday.
Denti defeated the No. 1 player from UT-Arlington Maria Martinez 4-6 6-1 1-0 (8) in singles. Denti opened the tournament with a 6-0 6-3 loss to the No. 55 ranked player in college tennis, Marta Lesniak of SMU.
Pozzan won a thriller over Emma Levy of Tulane 5-7 7-6 6-4 before falling in the semifinals to Julie Chao of Rice 6-3 7-6.
Denti and Pozzan paired in doubles to defeat Sarah Adams and Silvia Silva of UTSA 8-1. The pair lost to SMU's Lesniak and Marta Malyaschikova 8-4, then defeated Huet and Kalashniokva of Oklahoma 8-6.
Cally Waermer, a junior college transfer, was the third competitor in the Rice tournament for Sam Houston. She lost in the consolation semifinals to Jennifer Nowland of Texas State 1-6 6-4 1-0 (5) after falling in the opening round to Jessica Lange of Tulane 6-2 6-2.
