Bearkats hit the field; ready for 2010

"When the girls came in for the first practice, they had already gotten together and prepared a list of goals that were very similar to what the coaching staff was going to promote," said Brock. "The girls did a great deal of the work on their own and we are very pleased with the effort and teamwork that they have put forth so far."
The team has four main goals for the season; winning conference games, playing in the conference tournament and making it to Regional's and the World Series.
While the weeks spent away from practicing during the break had the threat of taking a toll on the team's technique, it proved to be no challenge for the Bearkats. On the first day of practice, the girls returned with a game plan and optimistic attitudes. Over the next few weeks they will endure practices that consist of work in the infield and outfield, drills in the batting cages, playing together as a team and ending with light conditioning.
"The practices are intense," Collins said. "We expect them to work hard everyday because the practices will transfer into the games and that will make a big difference in how we play in games. Our seniors have really projected themselves as leaders and set important goals. It is good because the younger girls on the team can follow their leadership."
The nine seniors have made an impact on the team over the years. The freshman class is also very strong. Brock hopes that over this coming season, the team can achieve all of the goals they have set.
"We have a very exciting team this year," Brock said. "We will be working hard in preparation for our first game. We will get better more and more over time and that will really help us win ball games. The seniors on the team have been a very special class. They are great leaders for the underclassmen and have represented SHSU to the fullest. We hope that this is the best year they have so far."
The Kats will begin their season on Feb. 12 against Kansas State University in a tournament at the University of Houston.
