BEAUMONT -- With five players in double figures led by Trashanna Smith with 19 points, Lamar defeated Sam Houston 86-68 Wednesday night to remain unbeaten in Southland Conference women's basketball action.
The Cardinals rank their league record to 6-0 and stand 16-4 after the win. Lamar never trailed, leading 37-28 at intermission and by as many as 18 points in the second half.
Whitney Smith scored 17 points while Brittany Brooks and Khamra Echols added 13 and 10 points respectively. Sam Houston drops to 5-12 on the year and 2-3 in Southland action.
Also scoring in double figures for Lamar were Darika Hill (16), Jenna Plumly (14), Kalis Loyd (12) and Ashley Crawford (11).
The Cardinals hit 47.6 percent from the floor (30-of-63) with nine three-pointers and out-rebounded the Kats 53-30 as Loyd led both teams with 14 boards and Smith had 11. Clarke Davis led Sam Houston under the boards with eight.
Sam Houston hit 38.6 percent from the field (27-of-70) with five treys.
Sam Houston returns to Johnson Coliseum for a 2 p.m. contest with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday.
