Top-ranked NCAA Division I women's bowling teams have gotten the warning. There's a new sheriff in town.
Sam Houston State University's first-year team has stunned the college bowling world this fall with a series of victories in major events that includes a win over NCAA defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson.
This weekend the Kats travel to Millsboro, Del., to compete in their final fall event and once again they will get a shot at some more major victories.
Fourteen of the 20 teams in the field at the UMES Hawk Classic at the Millsboro Lanes are ranked among the nation's top 20.
Ranked teams in the field include No. 1 FDU, No. 2 Maryland Eastern Shore, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Central Missouri, No. 7 Delaware State, No. 8 New Jersey City, No. 9 Kutztown and No. 10 Sacred Heart.
"It's really exciting getting to play the best teams in the country," SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. "There's a lot of talk about our program around the country."
Competition in the event begins Friday with five sets of quad Baker-game series beginning at 12 noon. On Saturday, five traditional team games will begin at 9 a.m. The Sunday at 8:30 a.m. the tournament will conclude with best four-of-seven Baker game matches in bracket play.
In Sam Houston's first two major tournament events, the Bearkats finished as runner-up at the Ozark Inviational in Missouri and third in the New Jersy Jamboree.
Other ranked teams the SHSU bowlers could meet this weekend include No. 11 Valparaiso, No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 16 Saint Francis (New York), No. 16 Morgan State and No. 19 Norfolk State.
Stephen F. Austin, who Sam Houston defeated in a dual match to start the fall schedule in October, also will be participating in the event in Delaware.
